Trina Salm Ward, PhD, MSW, is an Assistant Professor in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her research focuses on disparities in infant and maternal health, and specifically, on infant mortality. She is currently investigating infant sleep practices and risk of sleep-related infant deaths with a long-term goal of developing culturally-salient interventions aimed at reducing racial disparities in infant mortality.

Air Mattresses and Infant Deaths

Air mattresses are increasingly seen as an affordable and transportable sleep surface. However, there were 108 cases of infant death between 2004 and 2015 involving air mattresses, and this figure may be vastly underreported.
